< and > how do you remember how it goes? do you think of pacman eating the bigger number or the alligator eating the bigger number?

Even to this day, I have to stop every now and then and think to myself, "Alligator eats the bigger one." =]

L eft Hand makes a < (i.e.) L ess Than. If left hand makes < then right hand makes >. Therefore: If left = < or less than then right = > or greater than.

but the bigger one has more calories and that makes the alligator big , which means other alligators would eat it.

hm..i just remember, no great secret. it's like North, East, South, West directions. or left and right. how do you remember those? lol, although my french teacher taught us how to remember 'grave' and 'aigu' accent marks. she was like, cup your chin like you're tired and say "Go (grave), Away (aigu)". "Grave" is your left hand and "Aigu" is your right hand. I laughed so hard at her.

I can remember the mnemonic our teacher used when it was first introduced to us in primary school.
"Less than" is "kleiner als" in German, "more than" is "größer als".
"<" looks like a part of a "k" => "|<leiner als"
so ">" is the opposite.
That's how I remembered them
, but once you work with them more, you automatically use them correctly.
If you actually think about the shape of the signs, it's self explanatory
(cf. NuclearSilo's explanation
)

This is what i used before but we were thought in 1st grade to think about pacman.
but after using it for more than 10 years, i think i can use those symbols without thinking about pacman and the alligator

It's just an easy symbol. If anyone mistakes it with other symbols, why didn't him mistake + with - ? ~.~

<insert higher #> Forward(>) than <insert lesser #> <insert lesser #> Backward(<) than <insert higher #> exp 34>32 in my head i see : Thirty-Four is more forward than 32, so its greater than 32 on a number line. By now though i just recognize the symbols like another letter and only have to resort to that method of thought when im really out of it....

The bigger side of the triangle goes for the bigger # I guess... Never really had a problem understanding it, so not really a memory trick thing.

The alligator is greedy, so it always eats the biggest value.
