Why does the law forbid one marrying 2 people?

Marriage itself is based in religion.

Has nothing to do with the law.

Met a lot of interesting Christians on campus, they advocate scripture over what men of "faith" and non-biblical doctrines say. Appealing, in a way.

OT: I don't know why the law forbids such a union. But I bet it can get real complicated when it comes to divorce and settlements and entitlements and custody etc.

Fair enough, but if you go deeper than that, is it truly immoral? From an evolutionary standpoint, no.

BUT, to answer the OP, I think most of us agree it stems from religious/societal/cultural beliefs.
