Coil is not weird, just crappy. There's a difference. Noise and most avant-garde trash needs to be put out of its misery already. A lot of them sound like they produce their bland cacophony of "music" for the sake of being labeled avant-garde or "art". Wolf Eyes and Merzbow come to mind. Please. 
But enough about subpar genres..
Wouldn't put Coil in the same basket as Merzbow, they had a lot of stuff which was pretty musical, you have a point though, it's very pretentious and all. I still like Coil and I still think they are weird however.
