If you gonna create fiction don't use an era that actually happen and events that actually took place in that era and drop some implausible bull shit in the middle of it all and call it fiction. I don't mind fiction. It favors the imagination. But make it fiction from start to finish. And don't use Tom Cruise lol.

I think it's racist to point out that there are only white people. We live in a society where we have to make it obvious and ALWAYS include someone that's not white. That just makes it worse. Just let let it flow and society will eventually see past the color of people skin.

You can put zombies in WWII germany and not hear much about it, but not a white guy captured and swayed to a way of life in an era of japan ... c'mon now people pull things from our history to draw an audience in ... yea, an original story not bringing particularly anything from history is alluring ... but at times, an alteration to our history is equally appealing, as well

I have to agree with the OP: it just gets too ridiculous some times. You mean Tom Cruise? That movie was about an American soldier who met and lived with Samurai, and becoming one or somethin like that. So of course it prolly should of been a white dude. Thats like creating a movie called "King of the Vikings" staring Wesley Snipes. And try to explain how it happen by saying some black dude left Africa on a boat and end up in Europe and gain warrior notoriety amongst the Vikings. Pure horse pile. Ok, What you are talking about is related to the writing. It has nothing to do with discrimination in cinema; unless you want some asian guy to play an American soldier in the 1870s. If you think that's a bad movie then it's fine. But your points bring nothing of worth to the main topic: racism in cinema.

It was an integral part of movie plot. I'm talking about movies made from books, video games, tv series etc. in which the characters are obviously not white, but are portrayed as white people anyways. famous actor = more people watch it = money and just like I told you before, that is only the case in some movies. And I'm just repeating myself here because you obviously didn't catch it the first time, they took a random white kid from texas to play the role in The Last Airbender, not some famous hollywood star. They even wanted to put Jesse Mccartney on the cast, thank god they got the Indian dude from Slumdog Millionaire instead, at least he's some type of Asian.

Sigh I don't think you understand Hollywood. There is super famous (Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Lindsey Lohan etc etc) then there is I guess what you could call the C list? People who are still upcoming stars but aren't as widely known, aka the actor in your movie. Either way you've got it wrong. Azilius wrote: It's not about the movie
famous actor = more people watch it = money is the case for 99.99999999% of the movies out there. The other (2?) you mentioned are exceptions. Not the other way around lols. You're even sort of proving my point by them trying to put Jesse McCartney in the cast. Maybe he said no so they had no one left? It's almost always about getting the most known actors to make money.

I don't think dragonball was being racist. It annoyed me when they made him your typical high school kid who has japanese ki power and gets the random slutty asian girl to jump from the black jock football player onto him though. Besides, everyone knows asian males wouldn't fit as lead actors because they are all short nerds with small penises that know kung fu.

I don't think the directors or screen play people that selects mainly white actors for some of the films mentioned in this thread are racist. But I can see how hollywood as a whole combined whether they notice or not..... is being discriminatory.
You don't have to be a racist to behave in a racist manner. Lot of us here aren't really racist but have made some racist comments in our life time. I believe as a collective, hollywood is being racist/ridiculous ......but as individual directors and type casters they are driven by other motivational factors which lead them to choose someone white.
Factors like which actor will bring in the most profit. Should they get a good Asian actor to play GOKU in Dragon ball that is mostly known to the Asian community or get someone who is better known worldwide?

I think you or Charatsandhu are the only ones that seem racist about this >.>, neither of you work in anyway with Hollywood, so how can you say they are being racist lol. Ya theres lots of minorities, but theres more white ppl >.>, its like putting your hand in a bag full of white marbles with a few different colored ones and pulling out a white one more then the others, doesn't mean you hate different colored marbles or prefer white ones lol >.>. Point is, there's more white actors then others for one, and your overlooking the fact non white actors have plenty of great movies, and shows, and w/e else. Sorry to say but its the kinda thinking your doing about this that just seems retarded, you get this opinion about something, which is based off nothing more then what you have seen in a few movies, and all of the sudden, Hollywood is racist, without knowing it. Even if they did purposely make characters white, I doubt it would be because they don't want non whites. Seems rather stupid to think Hollywood is remotely racist actually.

Kidding.
The majoriy of Hollywood, and the rest of America I believe is prolly white though, just like Asian movies have mainly asian actors and stuff don't they? :d Totally agree. How many Japanese based movies have white people in them ? I know there are probably lots, but I reckon more are filled with Japanese. Like Azillius said, they want money, money, and more money. They're not going to get money if they put unknown actors in ovies that are supposed to top box office.

Because they know despite how bad the movie is made, fanboys will still go see it; and by a large margin, revenue will be generated by the fanboys. So far we have seen a half baked argument about a white guy playing a white in a samurai movie being racist. It's been decided that was ridiculous and you have lost credibility. Now it's about a white guy playing in a shitty movie that no one above the age of 13 really cares about? (This horrible movie is apparently the benchmark of Hollywood?) Don't worry about what you're experiencing. Everyone goes through this phase in early puberty.

Don't worry about what you're experiencing. Everyone goes through this phase in early puberty. I don't know what the f*ck you are saying. I attacked the writing of one movie (The last samurai) and then you said my argument was irrelevant to the topic. And now that I've focus on the issue being it hollywood as a whole you're now spewing garbage about puberty and fan boyism just because I've used dragon ball as an example(Which I've only used to relate to the existing discussion and not because I'm a fan boy). You don't know nothing about me so stop making an ass of yourself.
A lot of things can happen through unintentional means by a large group of people who were not working together but through their own isolated and individual actions has brought about some kind of connected outcome.
An example of that is you (being a clean person) will see a pile a garbage and chastise dirty people for messing up your neighborhood or the city without even thinking for a second that you've indirectly or unintentionally contributed to that pile of garbage. Even if it was on a small scale.
For the sake of this thread's discussion this is how I see hollywood as being unintentionally racist (As A WHOLE) at times. If the best man/woman for the job is almost always white, black, or asian then its natural for anyone to think your entire industry is discriminatory. Do I think people in hollywood are racist? no I do not. But the choices they make can seem racist. I don't think I further need to explain myself unless you are as dense as your statue Buddha.

Please shut the hell up. I have the Last Samurai DVD. And no I don't think that the Avatar movie is racist. Nor have I ever been to any site/forums or meet any group that is doing any brainwashing or revolting. As far as I'm concerned the Avatar is fantasy any and all things are possible and plausible.
