Funny Ror should mention overweight people..
Was outside my university today after class with a friend who was smoking a captain black's cigar when someone walked by and said 'you know that's going to kill you one day', and the guy was noticeably overweight..
Thought about this for a bit and decided to google around, apparently obesity kills more in America than smoking does. Hypocrisy at its best..
Why did I have to sit through hours of assemblies in elementary-school and high-school about why I shouldn't smoke, but none about why I shouldn't be fat?

Why did I have to sit through hours of assemblies in elementary-school and high-school about why I shouldn't smoke, but none about why I shouldn't be fat? Untrue about the obesity part. Considering studies don't differentiate specifically between obesity and smoking, the entire group of obese people, theoretically of course, could all be smokers. Insofar as this is true, the death statistics of obesity specifically is inconclusive. And obviously smoking is more deadly than obesity, considering there are monstrously higher numbers of obese people than smokers.

I'm much more inclined to believe the various articles and studies I've read than you to be honest. Your example about people being obese and smoking works both ways, and I'm sure some of the studies took this into account.
Regardless my point still stands, why are people always targeting smokers and not people who are overweight? Smokers get called names, are put down and everything else, but if someone were to put down a fat person they'd be looked at as a douchebag. What the

What the Fat douche-bags that smoke do get called names..what are you smoking? lol ^^. Anyways I do have a problem with smokers..they contaminate my air. I don't care if they wanna smoke a ball of crack mixed with rat poison and dipped in gasoline. Just go smoke that sh*t out in the middle of nowhere.

Don't smoke, don't support it, if you smoke do it FAR away from me coz 2nd hand smoke is the worst. Also i usually try to avoid having long talks to ppl who smoke or keep a bigger distance from them when i can, the smell alone is disgusting imo.
Obesity...hmmm hard to make a unbiased opinion since i am a little noticeably overweight myself but there is a difference between obesity and being overweight. Not everyone is a muscle man and being spindle thin is even more weird imo, those people look freaking malnourished.

What the Never in my near 21 years of life have I seen a smoker actually being insulted about the fact that he smokes. What would you even say? Dirty breath? Cancer lungs? Maybe things are different where I live, but smoking is seen as a pretty common thing to be honest. Now name calling for being overweight? Hell, I wouldn't even know where to begin. In regards to anti-smoking pressure that we see from governments and many different groups, the same sort of thing applies to overweight people as well. I disagree with it all, though. I'm all for getting the public aware about the dangers that can be caused from smoking because as we all know, they are real. But at the same time I think we go a bit too overboard with it and we forget that it's someone choice as to whether or not they choose to smoke. If they want to do it, let them. As long as they understand the risks involved with it than it's fine by me. This is coming from a non-smoker too, btw. I also think the same thing should apply to people being overweight. I don't know what it's like in the rest of the world, but where I live being overweight is seen as a pretty bad thing. There is a lot of healthy-eating campaigning going around and there is a pretty large emphasised placed on living an active, healthy life. In regards to the schooling issue raised before, back in high school I had 4 years of mandatory health class in which we talked about healthy eating, the dangers of being over weight etc etc. But with all of this said, I think more choice is needed. If someone knows the risks of being overweight yet they still choose to be overweight, for whatever reason (maybe they'd rather eat bad food, I'm not trying to justify it) than we as a society need to accept that. Much like smoking, less emphasis should be placed upon getting people to change their habits and more thought should be put into informing people of the risks, but still allowing them to make their own life decisions and choices. And note that I myself am incredibly underweight, considering my height, age and my muscle build I should weigh more than I actually do, so this isn't just an overweight person trying to justify their bad eating habits.

Might as well bitch at drivers for polluting your air, and I guess cows too. Both use up millions in health care dollars because they're fat or smoking. No difference in my eyes..A fat person takes up two seats on the bus whereas a smoker sometimes smells bad. My school has a '10 metres from the door' rule, so doesn't effect me. I walk on the sidewalk every day and cars drive by me though and I can smell the exhaust.
This could go in circles forever, my point is people shouldn't focus just on smokers, especially people who are fat.

BY "Hell, I won't know where to begin", I was meaning that there are so many numerous jokes surrounding fat people that I wouldn't be able to pick a spot to start as. Smokey? LOL! If I was a smoker and someone called me 'smokey' I'd laugh right at their face. Probably the worst insult I've ever heard. Idiot? Loser? All subjective and don't really derive from smoking at all, rather they can be applied to anyone in any context. I just don't see how people could be offended if someone 'teased' them for smoking. It's hardly like there's anything downgrading about it.

They call them names because they are 'killing themselves' slowly with the smoke..
If I told you I knew someone who was killing themselves and thinking they were cool while doing it, you'd probably think they were stupid. (do note that has no context and is not what I think of smokers)

To name a few that I've heard.. Doesn't make sense to call a smoker those two things.

I share this opinion 100%.... As long as the choices made does not impose an unwanted situation on others. example: smoking around non-smokers or taking up two seats on the bus due to your overweight size (I've seen this) where if you kept your weight in check grandma would a have chance to rest her weary bones for the duration of her ride.

Although smoking is't given attention (in the NL there's only this little thingy on the packs of cigs like: "Smoking Kills, Smoking Causes Cancer, Pregnancy is bad for the baby" that sorta stuff. But now, even our own "Diet Guru" Sonja Bakker is back on the television (wrote a bunch of books on dieting, then was accused of having anorexia and now she's like a fat smudge in the camera during her show telling people to fuckin' lose weight) Ohh, the irony of the Netherlands. Only here. but my point is this: If something is unhealthy they will all bring it to the big picture and tell people it's unhealthy. But then McD's starts to fight back stating their food is healthy.. haha
