I'd call them Linebackers, but Tank is easier to type.

Just as one who runs is known as a runner, one who tanks is a tanker.

Well they called tank because if you notice a tank has lots of armour and a tanker is a big iron or steel floating vessel so they have stroage defenses and armour or double hull maybe maybe thats why?

The American Heritage Dictionary recognizes it as a variant of bologna, informal or otherwise.

True, "tank", the vehicle, is a noun. However, the term "tank" does function as a verb.

As taken from Merriam-Webster Online:

Main Entry: tank
Function: verb
transitive verb
1 : to place, store, or treat in a tank
2 : to make no effort to win : lose intentionally <tanked the match>
intransitive verb
1 : to lose intentionally : give up in competition
2 : to suffer rapid decline, failure, or collapse <bought a stock that quickly tanked>

Apparently, they don't recognize the gamer definition of "tank."

In some languages you just tend to put that -er in the end, because jobs and such end in an -er (male) ... in german for example ... so most people would rather say Tanker in my language ... same as INTer or something.

Btw I didn't know that that ship was called tanker in english as well o0

I say tanker, because when I think of a tanker I think of a blader... and when I think of a blader I think of somethign that can't kill shit and thus I vote for the first picture. He might ram into some noobs [ie. Lil' fishing vessles] but I don't think you'll see him taking out the tank firing on him from the shore.

Random history lesson:
A tank was named a tank because when it was invented it was built inside a water tank.

Tanks just seem big and bulky and take a lot of small to medium fire without any hitch.

Tank is not a verb like run. The first place I ever saw the word "Tanker" being described as the person taking the hits was in the Euro Preview page. Joymax is known for bad translations, grammar errors, and spelling errors.
In MMOs the person in the front lines, there to take the hits, (ie. Warriors, Rogues, or Barbarians) is compared to a Tank.

True, but Joymax isn't at fault for this one. The word "tanker" has been used in other games before SRO.

Besides, I prefer "meat shield" anyway. :D
