This is exactly the kind of person I was talking about when I mentioned mental and emotional stability being important when it comes to religion.

Personally, I was raised with a few religions floating around my house christian, hindu, scientology, blabla.. and I think the bible and all other books of religion are full of shit. But I don't tell people they're gonna burn in hell or suffer having no virgins in heaven and blah blah for not believing what I do. IMO: religion just sucks. no real reason to argue and insult other religions as long as you're confident and secure in what you personally think.
Religion is not a crutch. It is the path by which true knowledge of the self is attained.
Despite popular belief due to the literalisation of the bible, this does not entail practice of any religion's rituals or traditions, but rather learning from the text, which in itself, when read as it was intended, serves as a pillar; not of hope, but of truth, because it is the lessons that are meant to be understood - not the story.

From personal experience, I have to disagree. I have countless times heard stories on tv, in the newspaper, and from my family and friends in which the following is almost always said:
"If I didn't have my God to hold my hand I would have committed suicide a long time ago."
A lot of people use it as a crutch. I have never met someone who didn't use it as life support in some way.

Because these people have done exactly what is expected of them: ignored the bible.
Anyone who actually understands the bible will tell you that there is no god outside of yourself.

lol Tell all the people that killed and died for their "lord" over the last 20 centuries that the Bible is just a path to true knowledge. We aren't talking about the Holy Grail here. Religion is and has always been man's first form of government. People are told what to do and how to live or face judgment from a god no one truly knows exists or not, and questioning it is conveniently punishable as well. Do as I say or burn in hell for eternity. Be obedient, and after a life of servitude you may be rewarded in DEATH by being allowed salvation from the fires of hell. Which is also something nobody really knows about.
I've been to Christian church tons of times. I know there are people out there who get a sense of security and happiness thinking they're escaping an eternity of pain and suffering by praising god. But God never wrote the Bible did he?

Christians cause me no personal strife. Although I am a hard-lined atheist, the moral ideals that Christianity teaches are inherently good. The problem is when you have Fundamentalists (from which there has been a large surge as of late) that view the bible and it's horrendously mythical stories as pure and infallible truth.
Science and Logic have told us that there was no Adam and Eve, garden of eden, or an omniscient god. Evolution is a proven scientific fact, and the bible is the best-selling work of fiction ever published.

Meh. I don't see why God couldn't have used evolution.

Not sure what you're referencing there but I don't watch TV, and therefore will probably not be seeing family guy any time soon.

theory
noun
1. a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world; an organized system of accepted knowledge that applies in a variety of circumstances to explain a specific set of phenomena; "theories can incorporate facts and laws and tested hypotheses"; "true in fact and theory"
2. a tentative insight into the natural world; a concept that is not yet verified but that if true would explain certain facts or phenomena; "a scientific hypothesis that survives experimental testing becomes a scientific theory"; "he proposed a fresh theory of alkalis that later was accepted in chemical practices" [syn: hypothesis]
3. a belief that can guide behavior; "the architect has a theory that more is less"; "they killed him on the theory that dead men tell no tales"

In the American vernacular, "theory" often means "imperfect fact"--part of a hierarchy of confidence running downhill from fact to theory to hypothesis to guess. Thus the power of the creationist argument: evolution is "only" a theory and intense debate now rages about many aspects of the theory. If evolution is worse than a fact, and scientists can't even make up their minds about the theory, then what confidence can we have in it?

#1 = scientific definition
#2 = layman's
science makes that distinction, but most people don't get it. every law in the sciences are in fact theories. the term you're looking for is hypothesis. Micro evolution is a proven theory, but humans most likely won't last long enough to view a serious retest of macro evolution unless; you consider the simple adaptations commonly made by people in everyday life, then you have Your "proof" of evolution in terms of the world of the large.
as i said learn to make the distinction between #1[science], and #2[layman] the term theory is only granted to hypothesis that have been put under rigorous testing and retesting, so please don't take the term theory lightly.
scientific theories are fact until another scientist or group of scientist finds a more suitable theory.
as a matter of fact Newtons Theory of Gravity was Debunked by the Late Albert Einstein ,ushering in the roots of theoretical physics, by; "discovering" or should i saw utilizing and proving [to a certain extent] his theory of relativity which is; Einstein's Theory of Gravity.

Last I checked its a theory? Wow, same here. What Encyclopedia Edition do you have? theory in science = fact theory in everyday life = a hunch learn the distinction and live by it. last i checked gravity was just a "theory" why the hell aren't i floating off into space? Becuase gravity is a prooved theory... theory noun 1. a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world; an organized system of accepted knowledge that applies in a variety of circumstances to explain a specific set of phenomena; "theories can incorporate facts and laws and tested hypotheses"; "true in fact and theory" 2. a tentative insight into the natural world; a concept that is not yet verified but that if true would explain certain facts or phenomena; "a scientific hypothesis that survives experimental testing becomes a scientific theory"; "he proposed a fresh theory of alkalis that later was accepted in chemical practices" [syn: hypothesis] 3. a belief that can guide behavior; "the architect has a theory that more is less"; "they killed him on the theory that dead men tell no tales" #1 = scientific definition #2 = layman's science makes that distinction, but most people don't get it. every law in the sciences are in fact theories. the term you're looking for is hypothesis. Than what is natural/scientific law? which Natural scientific law? you mean the theories? which theory??
Edit- I actually opened my school textbook to find that natural law describes nature but not how nature behaves in that particular way.
So theory is a temporary fact that stands until it is proven wrong.

Yawn, the only reason satanists call themselves satanists is so people think they worship satan. Gives em a good reason to tell people about there "view" (cause I wouldn't consider it a religion). Makes me laugh.
Good bye SRF the only thing you have done for me is realize that there are more ignorant people in the world than I though. Haha fuuck you thread creator.
