You can search Google on the filetype that you are requesting so you bypass any doorways and go straight to the download. It does not stop viruses or whatever, but you should download any format that is executable anyway if you want to be virus free from anywhere except trusted sites.

I use http://www.mini, excuse me *cough*, nova.com for popular downloads like movies and games. For other downloads with less seeds I use a subscription site.

And of course, utorrent as client.
