Even if there was a way to dupe in most MMOs like this all items (Individual drops or items that are bought via an NPC) are recorded with a specific ID in the database. If the system detects a duplicate item it will probably auto ban both accounts. Just a warning to those who want to mess with duping items. Weather they have their system setup that way or not theres always a risk.
They don't auto ban, but it flags your account for a GM to review. If you ever find a dupe its best to use an account that you don't mind losing, then dupe and sell to npc over and over. Even then you have a high chance of getting caught, you have a chance of getting away with it if you use moderation.
Joymax assigns each and every item with a unique identifier, if you dupe it will share the same one. But for some reason dropping it on the ground and picking it back up assigns it a new identifier. Even then they caught and fixed that dupe within 12 hours. But I can assure you they did not recode how items receive unique identifiers.
Chaud case was not duping items but gold. He was dumb enough to dupe billions. Then claim he did that amount on purpose to force JM to fix it, or course that was a piss poor cover up to try and hide stupidity. That was a gold dupe only, you make two guilds and guild war yourself without actually having the gold.
There is still one guild on Athens that used the dupe and no one got banned, moderation is key =)
