On CSS i'm known for both awping and AKing. I use awps when i'm screwing around, or need to play a role for matches; but, when i'm game on, I use a rifle because my strength is in my aiming and reflexes (proof of reflexes, look at me jump right when my teammate dies in the video 1:09)

May you post it on WeGame, Dom? The quality of it is better than YouTube's. I wouldn't want to play a 1v1 against you any day...*gulp*.

Is a lower sensitivity really better than a higher one?

All competitive FPS players use a low sensitivity. Sometimes people say X player plays with a high sensitivity, but it's relative to the other players and still stays in the low end of sensitivity.

Lower sensitivity gives you more control over what you're doing. because all the movements you make are dampened.

But, because not everyone has a high performance mouse, the rule of thumb is that for every inch you move your mouse, your crosshair should move an inch as well. Then you adjust it a bit higher for assault rifle players, a bit lower for snipers, or if you're comfortable you can leave it the same. And the other thing, you NEED to remove mouse acceleration. It screws with the predictability of your mouse, and the quick jerkshot aiming is impossible.

Look at my video, when I scope my crosshairs are more or less on the guy, even if when I right clicked they were far away (look at 0:58 of the video, I do a 180 and right on my teammates head, then zoom on two guys and kill them). That's from practice playing FPS for a long time - and because I have no mouse acceleration, I can predict how much movement I have to put into my mouse. You'll notice though that I overshoot my shots often, and I make adjustments while I scope - it's because it's a higher sensitivity than I normally use, so I overshoot my aiming while scoping in.

If you setup your mouse right, there's only two occasions you should scope: to take a shot, and to take a closer look. People who stand still scoped in around a corner get their faces blown off, and they lose their environmental awareness.

I'm not pro at CA, i've been only playing for 2 days. But, i've been a e-sniper for over 7 years, and I know the theory to playing the role well.

Mouse acceleration is something that windows uses to shorten the amount of mousepad space needed. Basically, the faster you move your mouse, the more it will move on your screen. What this means is, if you have quick reflexes and you jerk your mouse onto your target, because you moved the mouse fast, it will move a lot further than it normally would, and you'll miss the target.

Having it set to move the same amount regardless of speed means your mouse is a lot more predictable and controllable.

How to turn it off is easy on xp, you download the "cpl mouse fix" (google it, I usually use gotfrag to download it but you need a free account there), it changes the windows registry to turn it off. On vista there is no absolute fix, but you can turn it down to almost zero by unchecking the "enhance pointer precision" in the mouse pointer options, in the mouse options in your control panel. Also, if you have a gaming mouse, the software that comes with it usually has an option to turn it off.

I'm planning to write a universal sniping guide for all games, a guide that goes over basic strategies that apply to any game where you have to play the role of a sniper. To start it off, I thought I should go over some tips and misconceptions that i'll eventually integrate into the guide:

  • Snipers are solitary
When you're playing the role of a sniper, it's very important that you play alone. All the work you put into setting up a trap, hiding, or being deceptive will go to waste if there's a big idiot firing his automatic, rifle into the air, standing right next to you. You need to get away from everyone, and play alone. That's the first step of being a good sniper.

  • Snipers rush faster and harder than any class
A common misconception is that the sniper is a class that sits to waits behind some bags or around a corner, for minutes waiting for someone to come to him. That's a technique used that will be covered later, but it is in no way the main strategy that will be used, it's only a trick to get yourself out of trouble. In real life snipers can take shots from hundreds and hundreds, and in some cases, over a thousand metres away. In a game you don't have that distance to gap safety between you and the people trying to kill you. Because of that, you will need to create artificial distance, and that means always being on the run. The ultimate trick to getting sniper kills is to circle strafe on a gigantic scale. Circle strafing means going up face to face with a bad guy, and running a circle around him using your strafe keys so you can keep your crosshair on him. You lose accuracy but forcing him to spin around in circles will give you an assertive advantage in a 1v1. When you take this tactic to the sniping realm, it means figuring out where they are (through sound) and cycling to their side. After you pick all of them off, you leave the area and setup for the next flank.

I took the graphic below from a sniping guide (the numbers were camping spots he suggested - very bad guide), and i'll use it to explain what I mean. Crosses are people, long end is where they're looking. Green is good guys, red is bad guys, blue is you.

This is a common scenario, they setup on the back part of the map, and your teammates are in the construction building.

    Image

What you're going to want to do is swing around and take out their side. You have an advantage on the move: speed, surprise, fight on your terms. Taking him out should be easy, shooting techniques below.

    Image

What you're going to do after taking him out, is get to his body because you know the area is clear. While making your way, you're going to want to use some movement tips highlighted below - but what's important to remember is to use the hills to put something hard between you and flying bullets, and it will mask your movements until you get into position.

    Image

Once in position, and on their flank, you can squeeze off your entire clip without worrying about them knowing you're there - given you're using a silencer and doing it right. You need to prioritize and take out the biggest threats first. In the case where they all have their backs turned to you, you kill snipers first then the closest ones. Assuming they're all sniping, you would take them out from closest to furthest.

    Image

Then, after taking them all out, you always follow through with your kills and position yourself to where they were - and get ready to listen to gunfire and flank. As you play the map you will develop your own main routes and alternate routes to circle strafe behind them. If you watch the video, you'll see that i'm always in their blind spot, or heading to their blind spot and coming up against guys on the way.

    Image

  • The high-ground is the bad-ground
I don't know why, but for some reason most people feel the dire need to find the biggest hill on a map and climb to the top of it to rain down hell onto their fellow players (CA example would be the top of the construction building). However, there are a lot of problems with that. The US Army teaches it's marksmen that one of the most recognizable shapes is the human silhouette. That's why they try to break up the shape of their heads and shoulders when they're in the wilderness trying to evade the bad guys. How does this translate into the game? especially a game that lacks vegetation? When you stand ontop of a highpoint you act like a glowing (muzzle flash) flag that can be seen from almost everywhere on the map. Now, looking down onto the map, try to imagine all the little rooms and windows you could be shot from, and then look around you and realize that you're a flagpole on the top of a hill.

  • Sniping Techniques
    -baiting
Baiting for a sniper isn't a kill stealing technique, it's a life saving technique. The only thing you should fear in a game is another sniper. What you're going to do is squeeze his pressure points until you've got his ass on a plate. Snipers are human, they have normal or slightly higher than normal reflexes - they will never set their crosshairs next to the rock or corner you're going to strafe out from, they will always lead the shot and shoot prematurely. You always want to position something hard next to you, so you can "juggle it" to protect yourself from extra bad guys that are trying to help out the guy you're shooting at, or to protect yourself from a sniper. The first step to taking him out is strafing into his crosshairs. As soon as your shoulder steps out into the open, you will strafe back behind the rock. If you heard a shot go off you will immediately pop out and put a bullet in his centre masse. When you bait him into firing a bullet, he has to reload another one into the chamber meaning it gives you 2-3.5 seconds to mangle him. Dealing with an M24 or SR25 is a bit different: you need to peak completely out to see his body. Once you get back into cover you will scope in on the wall or rock you are facing, and strafe out sideways with your scope already vertically aligned. You can afford to take a bullet, but with your L96 he will stand no chance with your preaimed shot. Chances are, you will kill him before he even shoots you anyways.

    -defensive baiting
Earlier I brought up the point that a sniper will sometimes scope in and wait as a defensive technique, but bad snipers always use this technique as their primary way of scoring kills. The way it works is simple: if you miss your shot and the guy you're shooting at is rushing at you, you will run away and set up a trap. Sniping traps are easy: you stand somewhere that offers you good protection from all sides (except the front, and if you don't have time, any safe looking spot will do), and you give him 1 single way of charging at you. This can be a doorway or a tunnel. You scope in on that chokepoint and squeeze off a round as soon as he walks into your crosshairs. Then you follow through with your kill, and go back to the route you were previously on.

    -quickswitching
Quickswitching is of prime importance and usually taken as a given - it's rarely explained to new snipers. In CA you can carry two primary weapons, which is a great advantage for the sniper. You will select your sniper rifle, then your next best gun (an assault rifle, or for other games a pistol). This allows you to press Q to switch back and forth between your two guns. The technique is to press Q twice after firing your sniper shot, it skips the whole sniper animation and gives you a clear view of what's going on - be warned, in some games it will skip the animation but still leave you with a delay (like in CA), but this doesn't matter because it gives you a good look and more control over what's going on. And, you will be able to scope in and put it on target while waiting for the delay to end; being able to shoot as soon as it's done (rather than scoping back in, aiming, and taking the shot AFTER the animation is done). In the case where you only have 1 target, and you took him out, you will only press Q once. This brings out your assault rifle and will give you short-medium range protection while you run to your next safe spot.

That's all for now, i'll add more later.

Quick switching doesn't work for me, when I switch to the M16 I still have to wait to cock the gun and that really kills the "quick" part. For Circle strafing, It's really hard to learn, because when you have a sniper and your in close distance from a guy with an AK47 for example, its hard to aim because if hes moving, even just a little bit, you'll be aiming all over the screen because your zoomed in too close. No scoping is pretty hard too, unless hes DEAD infront of you sure, but what I usually do is I have a good idea of where the center of the screen is, so I zoom in real quick and take a shot, theres not much aiming, is all before you zoom in, thats what I did in CS1.6.

Yeah, I'm not the kind to sit down and wait for someone to get in my sights, I get bored. I'm really a rouge sniper, that's why you'll see me having a fair amount of deaths, not really a good thing but its fun :).

What you said is true, let me just place this image (taken from CA forums):

Image

I know what you mean by position 5, your everyone's first priority kill from there, but you get a lot of action. Because of my rouge style, I usually go up there with a teammate planting mines on the ladder and covering the second floor, Loads of kills but you'll die eventually.

But what I REALLY hate is when your in position 5 and you find like 3 snipers in position 2 camping behind that itty bitty ledge. YOU SEE THEM, YOU AIM AT THEM, COMPLETELY STILL AND SHOOT. Nothing. I don't know the trick to that one, aim a little downwards? at an angle? I don't know I just try to scare them away by throwing a grenade, and when they get up I pick 'em off.

I have to work on a lot off things, but whats this arguing about zigzagging at different height levels? I don't do that I just run straight with the occasional sharp corner and jump here and there..

What I mean by circle strafing is taking that 1 on 1 technique and applying it to a map wide scale, where you're circle strafing behind their positions.

Sniping isn't about getting kills, it's about survival and KDR. When you're in position 5 you're not getting enough kills to keep your KDR up. And even then, you don't get that many kills, when we played today I recall having more than double your kills each time. Another reason it doesn't work is because the L96 is only useful to 80-90 yards max, after that it's inaccurate. Adding height adds wasted distance.

True, I could barley keep a positive score then. I feel like in CA its almost never 1v1 there's always several people shooting at you.

This is pretty much what happens when I spawn in Snow Valley, this is just on a certain team, I forget which one Alpha or Bravo...

Image

The green areas are places or routes id go or move around to get some kills, and the blue routes are the places I would completely avoid. The routes in blue are surrounded with enemy re spawn points, pink circles.

So id spawn run towards the north east part of the map and you'll find like a good 2-3 people running clueless from their spawn which I take as easy kills. In this case I DO NOT advance to their positions when they're dead because thats just a death wish too many enemy are in your area and they can usually see you the second they spawn, so I try to avoid these, I run back and venture around the green routes avoiding clear sight of enemy spawn, and that's basically how I play as a sniper. I occasionally run down the blue spots but thats when im just having fun or when I KNOW im gonna lose, its flawed but oh well. :P

I dunno, I uninstalled Combat Arms after raping people so badly. It was boring, and really clunky. I'd much prefer CS:S over it, but I don't play that at all either because it's just too damn fake.

Somebody get Red Orchestra. I'll show you ownage.

Hmm, I barely use Q to quickswitch, normally I just press the number buttons at the top of my keyboard (1,2,3) to get a weapon out, and in CS I just scroll with my mouse :D
It's to hard to do 3 things with one hand lol >.< (Move, jump and switch weapons)

Whoah, I turned the mouse acceleration thing off :D

And I suck now :D

Maybe it's because I'm not really a sniper, but more a rusher?
