Apple has issued a technical note about Mac antivirus software, and, for the first time, suggests that Macs need such software. The note says: "Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult." The note then goes on to mention three antivirus programs, with Intego VirusBarrier X5 listed first.
It is worth noting this, since Apple, especially in its recent "Get a Mac" ads, has always publicly tried to ignore the threat of malware to Macs, as well as other security issues. We can only applaud the fact that Apple has chosen to recognize that Macs face security risks and that they require protection.

meh i could never dig up enough money to buy one of those and what performance would it have? Select your Mac mini. it's like $1000 CDN for a mac mini and the best duo core it comes with is 2.0, if i wanna faster one be prepared to fork out another $1000.

To be fair.
This is only the first time they've been this up-front about it. In general they've always mentioned a time when an Anti-virus kit might come in handy.

So, it's not that much of a big deal.
But after all their childish mockery of Windows, and now this means apple has just faceplanted.

Oh blabla.
Anyone understanding the basics of marketing, and how to make use of your competitors wouldn't say they've faceplanted.
Apple simply took advantage of a time where virusses on macs actually were a non factor, and windows got swamped. get over it.
Times change, apple got more popular, and now hackers started to look beyond microsoft to. You can't influence this as a manufacturer, and can only take advantage of previous times as long as possible.

Hey, what are they up to now, 10% or something...from 2006...when it was around 7.5%?

@Sharp234 you really don't want to see uptight. Cute that you got all that from 'Oh blabla' which more likely shows dissaproval then PMS or being uptight.
@Pr0klobster (spelled right outta my head!), even a 2.5% increase in this market, is from my point of view a pretty large gain.

Well...over the course of two years, slightly less of an increase in my book, but yeah, Apple needs to take what it can get.
Of course Linux hasn't really much market share at all - I think probably a percent or two.

They've been saying it even before any of the current Macs even existed.. They just happened to update the article recently with newer versions of the AV software. It wasn't some technical note secretly added to the site, just updating an old list of recommended software. Run along.. nothing to see here..
edit: Even though I hate the "Get a Mac" ads, they're fundamentally correct if you look beyond the hyperbole. PCs are (in general) more likely to get infected by a virus than a Mac. Not saying Macs are immune to viruses but the market share is so much smaller that any vulnerability that does break out can be patched rather quickly so infection isn't really widespread, ergo, the chances of being infected are slim to none.

Still leads you to wonder what kind of people would want you to believe Macs are essentially virus-proof though. Those same people have been selling people the same old shit in different shapes to people for the last 10 years.

I like how you used the word ergo, that's the first time I've ever seen it used outside of the matrix.
OnT: Mac's always spouted some crap, some of their points are valid and I'll say they're good, but their price is fuckin' ridiculous. Watch this:
Code: Select all
That's very unbiased, some of the points they make for mac are rather stupid like mentioning the it has paint, lol (though ms paint is the most badass program I've ever used in my entire life).
Yuppp, macs have always had viruses, but if you own a mac and you're a retard you're about a million percent less likely to get a virus than if you had a pc.

as apple will become more and more mainstream. people will start targetting viruses for them. it has always been a backseat to windows so no one bothered to make viruses for them. mhm.

Didn't even know there were viruses for Macs.
Have a mac?
I could send you to some AWESOME web pages...
While you're at it, just download them from my rapidshare...
I won't actually post the mac viruses I have... Someone posted a mac quasi-trojan from another forum I'm on. It's AWESOME for those people who believe mac's are the greatest, because they so eagerly download such software and expect to be fine.
