Hmm...
They "figured out" the 20.000 genes of a cow last week!!! No joke! They're 80% the same as human genes.
Ontopic, even though I do live in holland which is as far away from both Australia and the US as possible, it still feels a bit weird. Saw this on the news as well..

Meh. It's only the flu.
New strain. Body doesn't recognize it. Takes a while for the immune system to kick some viral ass.
Pity for the elders, but meh. Too many old people anyway.
BTW Spanish flu only killed that many people cuz people all were weakened by a 4 year war.
*awaits flu and sees it as a chance to lie 5 days in bed.

I live in California, but it seems like the flu traveled East in the US, so I feel moderately safe, even being right next to Mexico.
Even if I do get it, I can't imagine it being something that will kill me. I figure I'll lay in bed for a few days, keep fluids up, and get better.

Well, Australia has free health care. So most people here wouldn't suffer too badly. If something severe were to break out, our Gov't would do something. Probably take out another 300 billion from the World Bank.

[referring to a huge influx of patients because of a news report on E.coli] J.D.: What the hell are we supposed to do? Dr. Cox: Loretta, relax. I've been involved in every ridiculous TV induced panic there is - poison pills, SARS, West Nile, North Face, South Fork, East River, Monkeypox, pop rocks, toilet snakes, Mad Cow, Bird Flu, Swine Flu, and quite frankly every other flu that you could really only catch if you actually fornicated with the animal it's named for. And as a parting gift, I will tell you this - narrow it down to two symptoms; vomiting and diarrhea. Cause it's just not E.coli unless [walking away, miming] Dr. Cox: it's firing out of both exits. J.D.: [to Elliot] Certainly hope I don't have Dog Flu.

Goobronicus wrote: I just heard on MSNBC that Muslims are saying they find the term "Swine Flu" offensive, and want it to be renamed "Mexican Flu"; no joke. Thoughts? Who cares what it's called? It's killing people, and it will continue to kill people regardless of the moniker we give it. If that's even true, I think it's a bit silly personally. It's called swine flu because it came from pigs, neither a terribly tricky name nor intended to insult anyone. OIA (Orlando International Airport) has already started screening incoming passengers from affected areas, and has apparently been doing so since the CDC was first notified. We get quite a bit of traffic to and from Mexico, so that's pretty impressive that they had these measures in place already. Weird though that Florida doesn't have a lot of cases yet, especially with spring breaks and spring cruises and Mexico being a prime destination.

My comment was intending to say I didn't care what it was called, and that I thought it was silly as well, to clarify . They say it will be awhile to determine if this is going to be the next "Big flu" or just another drive-by type of illness that we never hear from again.

I was pretty sure you thought it was silly too I think this could very well be the serious pandemic the bird flu people were expecting, even though the CDC won't come out with anything that alarmist until absolutely neccessary. It's already crossed the human to human transmission barrier, and Mexico city is a very high pop, high density city. There are a lot of urban poor with little access to health care. If there's anywhere you wouldn't want your flu epicenter to be, it's MC -.-

oh noes! I've had the flu since friday or saturday, just runny nose and lots of sneezing though. Today my mom comes home for lunch and tells me about this, and asks me to research it for her. I watch CNN and read up on it on the web. A while later, I feel an overwhelming feeling to vomit. Only explanation I can think of... My subconscious knows I'm sick, so being the little pussy that it is, makes me sicker. That, or I have the swine flu and I'ma die :v
