You
can get a virus by just visiting a website, if you don't have protection. Every time you visit a site, it goes in your cache/temporary internet files, on your computer. Your browser isn't a secure bubble, it uses your harddrive to store data from the internet all the time. There's probably that chick up in the lefthand corner of this forum on your computer if you were to look hard enough, and the forum layout itself. Saving such things on your computer helps your browser load the page faster for the next time you visit.
It's less common than downloading an infected file, but it still does happen.

And why would some hackers hack a normal internet user? I think they aim for little more meaningfull www users.
Well, partly true I suppose.
Some internet scum just want to mess your shit up, doesn't matter who you are.
Some want to steal any information they can, whether it be bank information.. kewl pics.. or to even go as far as to blackmail you in some way.
Here's the real tricksters though; Some want your computer to be as healthy as can be - So they can launch their attacks on whomever they choose using your own computer. When someone does this, your computer is called a "Slave" and if they were to do something highly illegal, you'd probably end up with the police at
your door confiscating your computer for evidence.. and maybe even yourself. (Til they figure out it wasn't actually you, and that you're just an innocent victim) I know someone that this happened to.. it was on the news a while ago, well some tv news. Not CNN or anything of course. He didn't come back to that forum afterwards lol.. his mom probably didn't let him - not even bullshitting here.
anyway enough of that.. back to antivirus talk.
@Lady_Shadows hmm.. are you sure about that? I know that FF and chrome are much more secure than IE, but I still think it's possible to get infected even while browsing with them. Might be wrong about that one, though. Would have to look into it.
