0$
im lucky, the college i am going to my step mother works at so i get tuition waved, and i recently found out right before my grandfather died about 12 years ago he put $10,000 into savings bonds or something of the sort for my college education, and its done very well and is now worth around $26,000. so that pays for room and board. All i have left to pay really is simple things il need in the dorm, that and the netbook, and gas for the car. so i am very fortunate.
otherwise i would be paying around $9,000 a semester :\

Wow you guys go to cheap schools and are lucky. Lemme see if I can pull up my f ucking expenses. $20,294 = Estimated cost for a year (two semesters) Though I think close to 4 grand of it is personal and transportation. I don't plan to be going off campus much since I don't have a car so that will hopefully help They have like a 99% job placement after graduation so I better get a goog job to start paying the damn loans off Books themselves are like 860 bucks >.>

My university doesn't cost much. Its only like 1.9k a semester and goverment grant gives me like 2.4k a semester so I don't pay for anything out of my pocket.

Schools in Finland are free. You have to buy books though.

I dont know the education system in states/can/wherever; don't really know what a college means there. Here we don't have any tuition fees or somesuch; education is pretty much free from comprehensive schools to the doctorate degree. Comprehensive school is 100% free, after you'll have to pay for books, and meals and rent and such of course, but the state pays student benefit of around 300 euros/month and rent support up to 200€/month. Hum, Dumbo beat me to it.

Most studies are funded by the government which means low tuition, which is around 1400-1600 euros. Then books come on top of it. I think you get around 250 euro from the government as well. If you get your degree within 10 years you don't have to pay that back. But you can be envious of low tuition, but in the end we pay it back more than double through high taxes. Netherlands has 52% for 'high' incomes (and I pray to god you get there if you've studied for 10+ years) and I think most Scandinavian countries have high tax rates as well. But I'd be happy to pay those taxes for the proper education we get here. When I hear some facts about American public schools I feel sorry for those who have to go there (not saying all are bad, but there are a few terrible ones out there). http://www.catholiceducation.org/articles/education/ed0033.html

When I hear some facts about American public schools I feel sorry for those who have to go there (not saying all are bad, but there are a few terrible ones out there). http://www.catholiceducation.org/articles/education/ed0033.htmlThe thing is, many government programs aren't looking to improve the education experience. They realize just how massive of a task it is. Instead they do a quick remedial to get them more votes. The most common plan is to lower the standard itself to make it look like it's working. Black and Hispanic families/communities are often more turbulent. Also, they don't get the same vocab building household as a white family. Poor people speak different, plain and simple. That's why I never really liked how vocab was on almost every standardized test. College I can understand since many higher levels of study use latin as a root, thus having a wide vocab can help. For primary education like middle and high school, it's a bit unfair. The GRE is a joke imo. My gf just took it today, and I've been helping her get pre-pared. The vocab is sometimes alright, but other times there's no way I could get those words. (I'm not a fan of big words as you can see). The math portion seems ok for me. They're tricky, but most of them seemed to just test yours skills at manipulating numbers. I haven't taken a math course since High School, and I'm pretty sure all you need is Algebra 2 and some trig to get through the math probs on the GRE. For a graduate studies exam, I kinda expected it to have at least some calc. I guess it's made so ppl taking acting or dance or something can still get by. High School education really should take a more international approach. The IB program is prob one of the best HS progs in the US. I know most of us that were in it pretty much ended up with an AA degree from credits alone. And it made college easy as ****. It's not until I'm in the Junior-lvl class did new info start appearing. <3 my HS. In summary, the government really needs to up it's game and face the problem head-on instead of going these round-about way to temporarily keep it at bay. Instead of lowering the standard to make your state look better, let's try to avoid making the next generation dumb as ****. Instead of allocating 70% of the school's fund to sports team, try hiring competent teachers. I know a nearby HS had offered AP courses as well. Doing so is meaningless when you have bad teachers. I think our avg student still had a higher GPA than their val. They always hated us because we were in the news so often and they often claimed they were just as good. Not so when you see how their AP credit got 80% of their class into the local college, while 75% of us got into diff state colleges, 15% into private with full scholarships, and 10% into ivy. I've also talked to many friends in college who had AP classes and IB classes in HS as well. However, they had bad teachers. Of their class, only the val. passed AP calc 1. From my HS, 80% passed AP calc 2 and 75% passed AP calc 1. HS needs to offer more college level class to better prepare their students while still having enough money to hire good teachers. I think the teachers are the real issues as without someone good to guide you, you can't really go that far.

The taxation is progressive, meaning that those with bigger income pay bigger percentage in taxes. The total tax ratio is around 40%, close to countries such as Germany and Italy. Less than in Denmark and Sweden. Think the high taxation is a good system, the state pays for education, healthcare and social security and such.
