It takes thousands of generations to produce a noticeable effect that changes our physiology. We haven't evolved that much in 50,000 years, but we have changed a small bit. However, when you look back to who we were 3 million years ago then there's a huge difference.

I think what EvGa was referring to the human species. We (humans) just don't reproduce fast enough to actually see any significant change in our lifetimes. However, go to other another species with faster reproduction and shorter gestation periods and you're bound to see some very interesting mutations (read: evolution) taking place.
I feel like an ass for quoting myself, butFug_Dup wrote: Evolution is as much a theory as the theory of gravity. They do so by studying the evolutionary traits of the virus to predict its behavior and other properties that can help find an immunizing agent for the strand. Where were you the past year? I'm sure you noticed a little something called the " Swine Flu", which was an evolved strain of the influenza virus. And as I stated before, you can chose to deny it, that's your prerogative, but it doesn't change the fact any more than being an atheist makes religion go away.

Ok i will take my right to just ignore all replys here and just post my opinion about that topic.
Everybody has the right to believe in something, because we got a freedom of religion.(well atleast most of us) If he is right? -Who knows. But from my point of view ,all people believing in things like that are just to lazy to think for themselves Maybe we will know that at some time who is right. If i am right we will never know...

(seriously i'm interested in this stuff ) Yes, there are big changes, and humans have been around longer than 2010 years buddy Changes to our species: We no longer have very large and dense brows, we don't have as much body hair as we used to because of clothes, and our pinky toes are slowly getting smaller and smaller because we don't use them as much anymore. So yes people, evolution is happening, just because you can't see this second, doesn't mean it isn't happening. You can't see god but so many people believe in him, why can't you understand that evolution is much more logical and true than religion? Not sure where you are pulling the 2010 number from, modern day man has been around for 150-200+ thousand years. We are evolving, but it takes millions of years to see the accumulation of small changes that result in distinct changes. (speaking specifically of the genus homo and our ancestors.) For instance, a relative of ours skull (below), who walked the Earth 3-4million years ago.. took awhile to get to where we are now: Australopithecus afarensis

I am atheist but I actually like people believing in a religion. Now I may feel this way because I live in Southern US, and I see a good amount of crime and stupidity, and one of the only thing that stops people from doing whatever they want (like robbing, beating someone up, and killing) is cops and religion. People are afraid they will go to hell or bad things will happen if they do something bad. Now I don't approve people not using their brain cause their religions Holy Book told them something else. Like people disagree with the Theory of evolution even though it can easily be seen just because the Bible told them god made everything.

oh my goodness.. oh btw, its important to note that humans didn't evolve from monkeys. That would be a simplified and ignorant statement to make.

There has been changes in the human species even over this small number of years. For one thing people have evolved different skin tones with relation to where they live and what they eat. A more precise example of evolution is Sickle Cell Disease. It was developed by the human body help combat malaria and while having two alleles of the gene often reduces life expectancy people back then had more children and did not live as long so the Sickle was actually pretty good to have.
Has our evolution slowed down? Perhaps, but if you really wanted to know the answer why you would simply have to an understanding of how evolution works which clearly you haven't bothered to do. Here are some key points.
- Evolution is random and occurs fastest in species that reproduce the fastest. Human reproduction his a slow process and people o average only have 2 kids. Mutations can and do occur, that is how genetic disease are developed and sometimes these diseases are able to spread. Either way people who once lived only 50 years and managed to have 10-12 kids (5 or more probably died) are now living to 80-90 years and only have 2-3 kids. Far less opportunity for evolution to occur.
- Natural Selection has sort of gone out the window for people. People mate with each other for all kinds of stupid reasons. Mostly boredom. If females collectively picked a trait, say intelligence or strength then you would see a more obvious shift in the population towards smarter or stronger people. But there is no natural selection. We all know ugly/terrible people who get laid all the time for one reason or another. The lack of selection prevents humans from streamlining into one specific direction, instead we retain a lopsided amount of smart/dumb and strong/weak people.
Evolution is still a slow process for any highly evolved creature, if you were really interested this information is not hard to come by like i said and really only requires basic knowledge of the concept and some thinking...but like i said breeders don't choose to mate with the smartest people all the time so look where we are now.

Quote: I'll just give you some benefits of religion. religion has and always has inspired some of the most creative eras in history, including the Renaissance, the Golden Age of Islam, and the great philosophical thinkers of antiquity. religion gives people hope. As I have leukemia I have talked with many families that are effected by the disease and their faith in their religion and that something good will come always seems to make them strong and faithful to each other. I don't even mind when they preach to me anymore(I'm agnostic). You need to stop being so negative and looking at the bad things in life and look at the positive things as well. That is what my experience with this cancer has taught me and it's a good lesson. No one is asking you to change, repent, believe in this or that god, we just ask that you give religion it's props and respect and for you to recognize there is more to religion than judgment and general persecution of the different. Quote: including the Renaissance, Wow are we just sprouting random crap now? the Renaissance was cause by religion? Really? I mean even wikipedia know's how it happened you attributing something that was intellectaully inspired by the classic teachings to religion? Moron. Quote: Golden Age of Islam Again not inspired by religion, only reason this happened was because the Moors and Jews were driven out of Europe because of religious opperssion and along with them books of Aristotle and Plato, Socrates that evaded the mass book burnings that took place in Europe. Quote: great philosophical thinkers of antiquity Well do call me whenever a philosopher/s is in control of the US, and not religious morons (By control I do not mean the president alone as Congress itself is a pretty powerful power). If by religion negetively contributing to the eventaul positive outcome of an event then your right, but not yet have you listed anything that was cause by religion that has benefit huminity in the long run. Do please don't sprout nonsense. Quote: Gotta love this answer. Your pretty much saying, "It takes such a long time for species to evolve that we probably won't ever see them actually evolving. I mean most religious leader disagree about everything, but throw them together and ask them if homosexuality is wrong and they'll all say yes. Yea religion really has alot of merit.

I find that most people who question evolution in these settings are those who have already made up their minds that it's false and would never bother to read up on it.
I can name a handful of posters here who repeatedly question its validity and who were also repeatedly given answers, and still continue with their deceptive queries.

Of course there are differences, I was simply citing an example. Sorry if you have a problem with that.

The fact our dna is almost identical to that of chimpanzees, we share a common ancestor with them, it's in the fossil record. Already covered this part
Go check out the fruit fly Drosophila experiments. They DO evolve right before our eyes, to the point of speciation. Domesticated dogs? Artificial selection. Mmmm, fruit flies. I'll have to go check that out sometime
No where in my post did I say "basically we can never see something actually evolve." I believe you said: "evolution occurs over large time scales." which pretty much means evolution occurs over a very long, unspecified amount of time. And since I won't live for a very long time that'd mean I wouldn't be able to see it would I? Shows your clear misunderstanding of evolution. I'm dumb, got it. It's not an instantaneous change. Yeah I got that from the "large time scales" thing. It's small changes over time that accumulate in to large changes. Random gene mutation plus non-random natural selection = fit species = evolution. Everything is always evolving. You don't say? Better?

DNA is such an exact and incredibly complex thing thing that almost and DNA shouldn't even be put into the same sentence. Out of everything I wrote, that is what you picked out? why don't you fall back on your ridiculous statement. Our DNA is ALMOST identical. 98% match to be exact. Of course there are differences, I was simply citing an example. Sorry if you have a problem with that. I though it was 99.8%

You jumped right out and clearly showed your ignorance towards the theory of evolution with your comment (below) and were clearly attacking my reply, which if you'll check, began with the words "simple answer". Tasdik wrote: Gotta love this answer. Your pretty much saying, "It takes such a long time for species to evolve that we probably won't ever see them actually evolving. BUT EVOLUTION IS STILL REAL!" It's obvious you don't know much about evolution if that's the kind of conclusion you got from my reply. As if what I replied to pinoy was the only evidence for evolution. "You don't say" ? What is with that comment, if you agree then why are we discussing this. You are correct you won't see the changes in your life time, but over thousands of years there are changes, clearly documented changes, several of them posted in other replies in this thread. If you already know this, as I assume from your sarcastic reply, what was the "BUT EVOLUTION IS STILL REAL!" comment for? I mentioned the fruit flies because you CAN see evolution before your very eyes, speciation. It was simply an example.. But shows YOU CAN WITNESS EVOLUTION (specifically, processes of evolution as a whole). What has your panties in a bunch? Instead of giving these sarcastic replies, why don't you come back with some evidence against it? You attacked my reply first..I didn't attack you.

It's just that you obviously didn't agree with what I said, but didn't (and still haven't) added anything to support your side. You jumped out and made an ignorant reply to my post. I figured you would follow up with some sort of evidence...guess I was wrong. Honestly, I do want to hear your side.

Bah these things are only really fun if you're in the middle of them. But this evolution/religion shit never gets anywhere.

My room mate is an atheist, two of our best friends in the same apartment complex are heavily religious. Discussions are fun. We keep them civil.

Like I said in my first post, neither of us can chang the others mind, so why bother? BUT I do love a good discusion and admit that I've been acting stupid. Sorry about that. Having said that, your correct that I don't understand very much about evolution. But I would like to learn more about it, if you've got any sites I could visit that you like then, when I have the time, I'll read up on evolution to gain a fuller understanding of it so I can share my opinion with you about it. Anyways, sorry again for being an ass.
