Found my answer, TL ; DR : Core 2 Duo ends up being better than an i3,but not an i5

I was just about to ask the same question -- but then I found no answers so I decided to do the research myself.
On first glance here are the specifications of both a core2(R) and i3(R): Intel i3 (540): Street Price: AU$189 # Cores: 2 # Threads: 4 Max RAM support: 16GB (incl. GPU RAM etc.etc.) Ram Support Type: DDR3 -1066/1333mhz (So it won't allow anything substantial i.e. 1600MHz+) This particular CPU has the following clockings: 3.09Ghz/4mb Cache and no information on the FSB clocking.
Intel Core 2 Duo (8400): Street Price: AU$202 # Cores: 2 # Threads: 2 Max Ram Support: 16GB (incl. GPU RAM etc.etc.) Ram Support Type: DDR2-800/1066/1200(OC) Clockings: 3.0Ghz/6MB Cache/1333Mhz FSB clock
All in all - it would appear that the core i3 would be the better buy with the higher RAM support and more processor threads. However, the greater cache size for the core 2 will allow for faster speeds and better video editing and stuff. You will also have a better time overclocking the core 2 processor better than the i3. Of course, your question also asks about the i5 -- and well, the i5 will certainly be better off than all the rest. The i5 has the same architecture as the i7, just on a smaller socket. You can OC the i5 a substantial amount too, allowing it to perform AS well as the i7. However, the i7 CAN overclock better than the i5 obviously, but regardless, the i5 is a fantastic buy.
To answer your question in one sentence. "No, the i3 is not better than a core 2 duo, however, the i5 IS better." If you can get a q6600 -- that would be the best budget cpu.

That doesn't look too good.
That's standard on pretty much all batteries. Most computers that I've noticed usually only have a one year warranty with no warranty for the battery. So this one is actually pretty good.
