then whats the point of having genres if no one uses them right?
although genres are more a corperate thing it does help people discover new bands purly though the fact they like a particular style of music which would say be punk or rock, for larger genres such as metal it can be broken down into more distinct sub genres ie new metal, death metal, oprah metal and so on much to the same effect. thats why in the past iv argued over screamo and emo as they are not genres more what people deem to be emo or screamo gets tossed into them fad genres.
There are other applications for genres but listing and explain them all is pointless.
My only comment in this thread was more a curious correction to what i feel i knew you could have debated it but insted drew out the point who cares, i care im sure others care to there is always someone who cares so saying that is the most utterly useles waste of time to read

When I want to discover new music, I just search Linkin Park in last.fm and get a ton of really good hardcore bands.

idk where you get ur information master_wong. not sure if youre misinformed or just oblivious but linkin park is hardcore metal. i mean g4tv recognizes them as such, why cant you?

Last.fm searches on bands related to each other. Last.fm relates them through people's libraries and how much those people like each artist. It's not a match of genres, but a match of artists liked by people who also like the band you search for.
Anyway, as soon as you say you like a specific genre there's always 'know-it-alls' that start a stupid debate on whether or not that band really belongs to that genre. Since I've seen too much of those I just don't give a crap about genres or labels anymore. I like what I like and I don't care what genre it belongs to. If I want music like it I search for similar bands, not similar genres because that gets me nowhere.
