You will die yes...and you live to experience a chance at life and what it has to offer thus is why you and I choose to live.

That's just being narrow minded and not being able to foresee a bigger plan.

You have no proof to back up your foresight of a "bigger plan" nor does the person who believes in no plan at all. You can believe whatever you want but at the end of the day you can't even with 100% certainty account for your own existence so in the end you/we have no clue.

You can observe what your mind tells you or what the physical world around you shows you and examine the patterns but all that was put forth in front of you without you knowing who or why. Your very thought process was not designed by you so anything you think and say cannot be truly your own doing. If you were the architect of your existence you would at least know were you came from and what "bigger plan" you have carved out for yourself. In my opinion an agnostic approach/outlook is the most sensible option right now.

All I'm saying is live your life and have fun and learn but don't waste time trying to affirm what you think you know or believe when it can't be proven or dis-proven at this stage of our existence. How is that being narrow minded?

Religion BAMP!

First few minutes address the issue discussed earlier in this thread, religion's untouchable status.

If you have time watch or read Dennett's material on consciousness. Mind-blown.

i believe bruce lee had the best outlook on life:

he believed in looking inside yourself to discover your talents and your role in life. he believed a teacher to be a catalyst to self-discovery, and not someone that can "teach" you something, unless you yourself actively participate in your own education.

same can be said for religion and especially organized religion. it's so rigid and muddled in ancient dogma that it just doesn't work anymore. it's more harm than good, especially those sects of a certain religion that are so trenched in outdated traditions and constantly nitpicking on their sacred texts, that it's become a Farking circus.

f uck organized religion

but i respect what you do in your life

I've never quite understood why some religious people (and non-religious) are so hellbent on convincing others to believe one way or another.

I was brought up in a Christian family. I still have many of the beliefs I had when growing up, but perhaps not all of them. We were always taught basically that God wants us to believe in him, and spread 'his word'. At the same time, he wants us to respect the beliefs of others.

I take that to mean that I can have my beliefs and tell anyone in the world who wants to listen - IF they want to listen. If they happen to believe the things I tell them, that's all well and good. If not, there's no need to try and work hard convincing them. Just respect their beliefs. Even religions that believe in the same god do it differently. Who's to say who is right? It's all about what you as an individual believe.

Sure, you can be born into a religious family, but you can't (or shouldn't be) forced into following that religion. I know that's how things happen, but it shouldn't be. You're supposed to believe because YOU believe, not because a bunch of family members with pitch forks and torches tell you to believe, or because some guy wearing robes and a big fancy hat tells you to believe.

Well we all know that God sits on a cloud in the sky throwing lightening bolts at people who pissed him off. The residents of that Ohio town must have done something horrible to cause such a disaster!

Remember that "Draw Muhammad Day" thing on Facebook?

A Pakistani attorney general is calling for death of Mark Zuckerberg, who is the CEO of Facebook. Also for the German woman who made the group in the first place. Pakistani laws and ideologies apply to the whole world?

Yeah really... Religion is "supposed to" make you a better person. Better than you were without it, not better than everyone else. Again, "supposed to".

"Extreminism" is a direct derivative of an overzealous religious mindset. You don't arrive at being a religious extremist by not being religious in the first place. There's a direct correlation, and it's fairly easy to understand.

Please tell me how I should evaluate it then?
The extremists do completely branch off of religion, which teaches terrible things to people who can misunderstand it, or who don't think for themselves (an alarming # of ppl btw).
Generalization is the only way to address the matter, because in each religion there are ALWAYS extremists who destroy the entire religion's principles.
However, religion is pretty much the source of evil in the world, and regrettably the SOURCE of morals, however in today's world, religion is practically a travesty, considering how much evidence is placed against it, and how blatantly corrupt it is.
Nihilism, Atheism, Agnosticism are truly the only ways to evaluate the current universe, and really if you find that so terrible, then you have to grow up.
Yeah it sucks that there is no real meaning to life, inherently, but you can make a meaning yourself.
I totally changed topics, but whatever.
Anyway, religion pretty much screws up everything nowadays, whether it's the Middle East women's rights denials, attacks in Israel, bombing abortion clinics, denying free speech, denying other natural rights, bla bla bla.
If people just evaluated the situation of religion for a short amount of time, they would realize how ridiculous it truly is.

Because if you ask your parents why did they punish you (for some reason), they will answer "because we love you".
Ask it now if you don't believe me. :sohappy:
