Contribution isn't equivalent to slowing it. Again you miss my point. It may not be BECAUSE of religion, but religion is used in justification. You want examples?
Stem Cells & Abortion. I'm not blaming all bad things on religion, but when it causes something terrible to happen, why don't people wise up. Religion is pretty much outdated, it's good that people look to its morals, but when it gives you a crippling delusion and false hope, that's what annoys me. It was created thousands of years ago with underdeveloped technology, and you seem like a smart guy, I don't know why you can't analyze the situation?

You are going off the assumption that all religions are made up and aren't true. It doesn't matter when they were thought up, they are a belief system of higher and spiritual power. We aren't talking ideology. Last I check... abortions slow society, I mean you're killing something that would someday grow up to be somebody. Lucky for any of us on this forums our parents didn't decide to have one. So anyways, I'm guessing you're saying abortion and Stem Cells go hand in hand because the whole fetus thing. Even though science does what science does and finds new methods. Again I say, human factor, because humans would find something to blame/justify for the reason they feel a certain way even with out religion. It isn't something I just assume, its something that can be proven, because people without faith do it everyday.

--Edit-- EvGa, I'm just curious, what part of Texas are you from?(If I may ask)

Fiction. I'm sorry, but you are just riding on a false delusion. Religions are made up -> I.e. not true. Belief system based off of faith. And abortion, I guess with your ridiculous logic one can say what if you abort a serial killer? That's ridiculous. No, the fetuses can be used to make stem cells, which do wonders. Also, if more fetuses were used in the current time, we could find ways alternatively, but many uneducated people just preach against stem cells anyway. And yes, it's speculation, religion was used as JUSTIFICATION for many terrible things. Without religion there would still be violence, but right now, religion slows society, brings upon false hope, and pretty much placates society. It was made thousands of years ago, and is FALSE. Idk how to help you :(.
If you want to look to the most modern religion, I guess you should check out scientology, because I guess it isn't made up right?

If you can manage to have an e-mail address, create an account on a forum, and post topics and replies, you certainly are capable of going to Google and type away any inquiry you have on pretty much any topic that comes to your mind (*wink* *wink* Evolution *wink* *wink*).

But alas, here we are again for the upteenth time.

I would like to make a different kind of statement here.

Even if there was a God I wouldn't care, I am not for worshiping other beings for any reason. I am happy and at peace with myself. The idea of someone else telling what happiness and purpose is just doesn't find much comprehension where I sit.

Abortion is not a very convincing argument in why you don't believe in God, and I have vistied many forums, I was only stating how I like that SRF goes slighty OFT, thats all, and I love SRF for it, and yes I know every forum does it

No one said abortion was the reason why they don't believe in God =\

It is just linked to the slowing of societies progression. I don't really see how anyone can argue against this either.

Religion->abortion->stem cell research
Of course not all anti-abortionists are religious, but it's safe to say a large number, perhaps the majority, are and believe in it because of this.

I'm atheist, and walked in the cold on Jan 22th with my GF to protest against abortion, now shes pregnant, I'm looking forward to be a father :D

but he asked for us to convince him why we don't believe in God. And stem cell research is not directly related to abortion. btw, oldfa.gs FTW

I think it's a better we divide people into 3 sides : atheist, religious people and believer who doesn't follow any religion.
So if religion dies out, there're still 2 sides remain.

@EvGa: interesting

Well, as long as people worship something, the belief in something greater as always been prevalent in the history.

no offense to science advancement but science is the origin of pollution, deforestation, global warming, lack of living space. Soon the earth resources will be drained out. People will fight for oil and water and cause WW3. If people 2000 years ago can live happily without the need of internet, air plane, cars, etc... then there is no reason why we need them to survive. Science should be slowed down like the year of 1900

You don't need to say no offense to science :)
And if science were to be slowed down to 1900, no cross-world travel, no space travel, no quantum mechanics (modernized), no ERV (EvGa :) ), and so many things we would be missing. The more we progress the easier life will become, and the more we can fix problems :)!
Also @ whoever said abortion isn't a reason to not believe, you didn't read my argument. Because someone said let someone believe whatever they want, I said abortion is a scientific advancement, and religion is largely used as a justification to stop it, thereby slowing the progression of humanity/science.

Indeed science bring life easier. But we have to pay a cost, the destruction of our planet. Moreover, life is more meaningful when you do hard work to achieve something big.

Example: if you lost someone because of long distance separated, find him/her through many adventures is more interesting and meaningful than phoning him/her across the world. Today to travel across country, you take an airplane, nothing big. In ancient time, to discover new world, you got to travel across mountains, forests, rivers, meet many adventures with dangerous animals, etc...

If in ancient time, human were managed to live happily and a meaningful life, then what's the point to have a kick ass technology which lead to the destruction of the planet at all?

To an average life span of about 30 -_-. Destruction of the environment is being/could be reversed with further increases in technology. Also, back then, we couldnt discover anything about our past/space travel, and so many awesome things!

Yeah... I'd rather live today. There are so many reasons why I would choose now rather than the past. Like good medicine, good technology, good education, good sanitation, no mass plagues that no one could cure, no mass wars that involved an army of 100,000+ people with swords ransacking your towns/cities, etc. I could go on.
