Handing someone cash for doing a job is not technically legal in the UK because you are avoiding income tax... i know it sounds silly for tips to be income tax'd but it would make you an awful lot of money if you didnt have to be taxed for tips in the uk. (base tax rate is 20% earning more than £32k a year will see that rise to 40%)

so tipping into a jar would definitely be deemed illegal AFAIK =S

I remember seeing a while ago that in China or Japan, maybe both, tipping is seen as a rude gesture kind of like saying fvck you I'm better than you. Maybe it was Vietnam. I'm too lazy to look it up.

It was in China where tipping is actually a rude gesture. Same with eating all the food on your plate (means you're not full). I can see it being the same in Japan as well too

Well, they will not accept tips in Japan. They'll chase you down and give you the money back if you do; however, the eating thing isn't Japanese.

How dumb is that. The country has nothing to do with a server getting a tip, the country doesn't help in any way, so it should get nothing.

Theres a difference between doing your job, and doing it well.

Lol yeah, depending on your monthly earnings you pay a ton of taxes. Not just income tax though. IIRC my mom pays 55 or 63% taxes, in other words, she gets less than half of what she earns before taxes, it's ridiculous.

oh yea... most likely higher earners (higher than 40k a year) are likely to get taxed on other things no matter what -.-

but the income tax is 40% (however it will be raised to 50% next year if i remember correctly... unless u earn over 125k and then it goes back down to 40% because rich people can do what they want)
