Recently it's come to the point, that people do not take this game as a game of skill in none of it's aspects. People who say that are DEAD wrong.

Let's settle on a few things:
As an MMORPG, the player needs to invest a lot of time into it. It's not about lightning-fast reactions such as in FPS games.
Becoming strong in the game requires plenty of time spent with it. This is why people turned to botting to level up faster.

But as far as I can tell, the non-legitimate population of the game actually spends gradually less time with the game as they level up higher and higher. The result is what we observe about the high levels now.

Gear also plays an important part in the game. Without good gear, any build is weak compared to others. But great gear does NOT make a weak build good, compared to others on par with it.
I'm not saying gear does not matter. I'm just saying, gear is NOT everything.

Let me demonstrate my statements:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73-WbY4w0p4

The video is quite well known. The first fight is a classic example of how the individual skill of the players decides the fight.

0:33 -> the INT ghost walks. What does the glaiver do? He probably keeps spamming his GSM key, or maybe SST. That's why he walks some steps, after the INT ghost walks. Then, he tries to ghost walk himself. And he does it exactly when he has reached the INT, exposing himself to a nuke.

0:49 -> the same thing again.

1:05 -> he doesn't ghost walk at all. Again, the INT gets a free nuke. No more lucky stuns this time.

See, the dumbness of the glaiver makes the fight an easy win for the INT. The tactics of the INT are not perfect, but what is to be noted is the following: Look how he never spams a key in advance. He waits to see what is going to happen and makes his choice shortly afterwards. It takes knowledge of the game, self control (not to go crazy spamming 1-2-3-4 all the time) and a bit of intuition.

For those of you who think this game is not about skill, think again.

I think there's a big difference between having a tactic and having amazing skills.

And also there's a big difference about having amazing skills and not having a tactic at all.

I didnt watch the video, just read your explanation which i found enough.

I have a tactic while pvping, in fact there's a topic about that where people just posted their tactics as in for pvp.

http://www.silkroadforums.com/viewtopic ... =stab+stab

To me, holding a kick ass weapon and having an amazing gear and of course, a well based pvp tactic, you're good to go, instead of having leet skills or something.

That dude who got owned by the nuker just dont know how to pvp cuz he aint got a good pvp tactic (does he even have one?).

So to me, this game is all about time based-gears-suns & logic.

I completely agree. SRO like many other games, can also be played on many levels. Pvp is just one aspect of it.

Theres a game outside the game ;)

Metagamer for life.

lag...that really is the difference between life or death in pvp. Same char, same build, same skills, same gear, same everything and if one lags even a bit...death.

of course it is a game of skill, its not just having a sun weap n pressing 1, 2, 3, just run arround a bit n you will see sun users geting owned by ppl with regular gear coz they dont have a clue how to play their chars, of course gear helps a lot, but its not all, if you want to successful at this game you gotta have a decent gear, farmed skills n some brains, just gear or skills alone wont make a good player

i understand what you guys are saying. but seriously man, gear+weapons make up at least 70% of your chance of winning. give me a sosun full set and i can stand there and give you a 30sec headstart no retaliation. With a decent sosun weapon, i can 2hit someone my same lvl with normal gear. What type of tactic is there to talk about? What skill is there?

Thats why i've always maintained, sosun d8 has scewed up the balance of this game. Its screwed up because normal d9 items are not yet available for other normal(legit) players. Why there should be equivalent of d9 sos when no normal d9 exists is totally beyond me. Its simply retarded logic by joymax.

i'm sorry i've gone into another tirage blasting d8 sosun. But its a fact that it imbalances the game. It would be alright if ppl dont cheat in this game because only a lucky handful would get sosun, and at most only 1 or 2 parts. But the fact is that ppl do cheat, blatantly and extensively. Having d8 sosun guarantees that some cheaters will get their hands on a full set. d8 sosun is a no.1 incentive for ppl to bot. IF i were to bot, i wouldnt bot to hit cap quickly. but i would certainly bot to farm for sosun.

OK im going off-topic a lil, but yeah, gear and built aside, dont forget char level is also impt. It seems the game system has some inbuilt pvp penalty if you are lower lvl than your opponent.

you are wrong. i have seen many full sosun players who totally have no idea how to play their build, use the correct skills and still fail to win. the nice thing is: this game is still evolving, the people who might be strong now can be no name's on the next cap the real heroes are the ones who managed to keep up on each cap and make a name without the self proclaimed status of being strong. trying your luck with a bot to farm for sosun is just a waste of your time, sun will drop no matter what and if you aint on the correct time at the correct mob then yeah you can already forget about it consider finding a sun as actually meeting a GM.

doing a phantom walk takes the skill of a 5 year old. STFU with the skill this is not Counter Strike 1.6

ORLY? i thought i was playing a FPS!

Ofcourse ghost walk takes skills. The way you choose to use it, and when can change the result of a fight.

Agreed.

It would be more fitting to say: "SRO is a game of strategy", instead of skill.

Notice in the video the INT at 1:08 when he got his knock down working, he proceed to his stabs and had 2 criticals on the first 2 stabs, he reacts to it by pulling out his spear to finish the glavier off, instead of zooming away and nuke again, which will give the glavier an extra second to pot. Good work IMO really.

good reaction, good knowledge of the game, decent gear = Good player

Skills does matter IMO.

From my experience, 98% of people with SoSun play like a n00b. Skills and builds makes up a very huge chunk of the outcome, not gears.

The only person I know of that can destroy a guild full of level 80 botters is Death2All.

It's the truth, most people think gears are everything when it's only a small portion.

I myself have only reached 5th degree twice. I'm too impatient. In PvP, I just spam the only skills that I have. So in some cases, like mine, it's not that they are noobs, it's that they just haven't pvped in such a high standard and class before.

@ Richard Dawkins: Pressing the phantom walk button is easy indeed. But doing it at the right moment and correctly is not.

Check the video. The glaiver is a complete idiot. He just presses the ghost walk button, like you said, like a 5 year old.

And look at the results...
Think again

anyone can be good in these mmorpg games. fps is harder and require more skillz, took me a while just to be good in a game like call of duty.

You say a lot of things. Got any proof?

Most posts you make are like "I'm the best". I don't have anything against you being the best, but maybe give some proof. All Ive seen is your guild storage and thats showing nothing.

When I pvp of course I try to kb and kd before I use the strongest attack, but nothing much I can do else with my crossbow skills.

Everyone on Greece knows I'm the only one capable of killing a whole guild full of lvl 80 botters by myself.... and also I destroyed the Fiarist & XMAT with 1-shot.

Sure this game requires some skill.

But compared to other games this game requires little to no skill.
Sure dual wield brings a bit of more skill but thats about it.

A botter will not be as good as a legit who got to level 80, but he will have better gear. Then he only needs to play like a week or two constantly either pvp or grind to check out all skills and think of a good strategy how to attack.

If you would give me, for example, right now any lvl 80 character fully farmed I could make a good pvp strategy within a week without ever before playing on him/her.

No one on Earth could get skilled within a week or month in games like CS, COD or MOH. It takes several years of constant playing to be able to have great skills.
