NEW YORK (AP) - Scientists have created the equivalent of embryonic stem cells from ordinary skin cells, a breakthrough that could someday produce new treatments for disease without the explosive moral questions of embyro cloning.

Research teams in the United States and Japan showed that a simple lab technique can rival the complex and highly controversial idea of extracting stem cells from cloned embryos.

It was a landmark achievement on all fronts, defusing one of the most divisive debates in modern medicine and religion. It was lauded by scientists, ethicists and religious groups.

"This work represents a tremendous scientific milestone - the biological equivalent of the Wright Brothers' first airplane," said Dr. Robert Lanza, whose company, Advanced Cell Technology, has been trying to extract stem cells from cloned human embryos.

Ya know where a shit load of the stem cells that are used for expermients come from?

Ukraine.

They kidnap newborn babies and kill them, just for their basically fresh stem cells. Mothers are given 200$ to have an abortion after 8 months too.

@crumps, and fudge... read the article  they dont use embryonic stem cells. they take a virus infect skin cells and make them mutant to tissue similar to stem cells. man... is reading that hard?

*sigh* i guess srf isnt ready for real news >.>

Whats up with your *sighs* ? Feeling depressed? Had a bad day? I could advise you a cure BUT that's a different story.

Real news? lol sorry but if anything dramatic where ever to happen with stemcell research the big pharmaceutical companies would not allow it.

But w/e 'we' 'srf' are not ready for 'real' news. ROFL.

Will take awhile for this method to have therapeutic value. Its a step in the right direction, at least now theres less opposition from religious groups.

what do pharmaceutical companies have to do with this? nothing ... lol don't
you mean genetic companies , also this new method removes stemcells
form the procedure all together and as such is a cheaper and easier way
to carry out research.
oh and this is dramatic, as in there no longer needed due to this new
method.

Yea but seeing how this new testing is now valid, stem cell research will probley
be phased out.
and why the hell would a company that makes aspirin use stem cells? it was
genetic companies who were under going research into it to find cures for
genetic diseases.

A company that makes Aspirin ? Hmm you should inform yourself of the variety of products / medicines a pharmacutical company sells / provides.

Varies from pilled drugs to physical and mental treatments.

Yes Genetic companies reasearch it, obviously. But they do not distribute their products.

Stem cell research advancement "news" comes up every month IMO.

Everytime I hear they've succeed in making this making that but nothing on actually putting into use =\

I don't really want to know they created stem cells out of liver cells or skin cells or whatever cells. I want to see some news like thye've succeeded in redirecting the cell specializatioin and reconstructed the entire retina with stem cells or something. Maybe I'm asking for too much.

There's more to pharmaceutical companies as Crumpets stated.
They actually do genetic research.
Did you ever heard of pharmaceutical biotechnology. It's all based on improving someone life quality with DNA alterations.
Small example: modifying the DNA of bacteria so they can produce insulin, which is great for diabetic people because you don't need to extract insulin from pigs thus eliminating problems with your immune system because pig insulin differs a bit from human insulin, while reducing the cost.
Wait 1 full year and I can blow your minds with facts about this branch.
1 year due to
*the fact that I should study my pharmaceutical biotech course for my januari exams and I haven't that much atm.
*The fact that I'm going to take advanced pharmaceutical biotech as one of my optional course next year.
