My home PC is getting really old, it's no longer worth to replace any parts, so I decided to buy a brand new one. My problem is that I haven't been following PC news for years, and guess what, I have no idea what's good and what isn't. Could you guys tell me what you'd buy if you needed it mostly for SRO and Photoshop, sometimes a bit of 3D modelling? Please try to keep it affordable.

Whats affordable for you, Do you play games alot. We need a bit more information

3d modelling, photoshop.. u doin some kindof study/work in the design branche?
cause i am, and i need to work with software a lot, which is why i chose for a
laptop instead of a computer.

if I were you I would buy a 650i mobo it's cheap and a solid one and then a decent core 2 duo mabye a E6650 or 6750(I got that) and then overclock it. Then just look around online for good dual channel 2 GB DDR2-800 ram set and then I would suggest the GeForce 8800 GT from evga it's the best value graphics card but gives awesome performance. and ya what cin said if your gonna be needing it mobile just get a good Toshiba or HP laptop or something.

Nope, modeling is just a hobby. I used a laptop for a couple of months but I still couldn't get used to it. A desktop PC is the one for me.

Thanks, I'm going to look into it. By the way, I forgot to mention in the first post that I was not into PC religions. At the moment I have an AMD with an Ati card, but I'm ready to switch without drama.

Well 2gb ram and a new decent gfx card like a 8800 gt and a dual core processor is what you need, mainly with these you can probably run anything smoothly.

Here it is, mine costs about 1200 bucks bought in pieces. I can do anything with this set-up, and run ANY game, even Crysis, with the specs on full kick-ass. CoD4 looks amazing also. I run 2 x 22" monitors and everything is beautiful.

Pro: AMD 5000+ B.E. oc 3.3ghz
VC: EVGA nVidia 8800GT 512mb SSC Edition (runs EVERTHING on high)
Mem: Super Talent 1x2gig stick DDR2 800

Case: Antec 900 gaming case (the thing is SICK!)
Cooling: Artic Cooling Artic Freezer
Media: LiteScribe DvD burner.

1200 bucks for a pc is a lot. he can run all his programs fine on a pc for less
than 1k bucks.

True cin, but without my video card, my system would be 850 bucks. He also stated that he does 3D modeling, doesn't that need a powerful CPU and graphics card to do? So, sorry i didnt clairify that to him if he wanted a "budget cheap-azz" machine.

I didn't want to set a price limit, it's just I don't want to spend a fortune on a PC that I don't really need. On the other hand, I'd like to keep the new PC for a while, so I don't want a low-end one either.

3d modelling, depends what programs he uses.

if he uses graphical programs like 3d max, ironcad, etc, he doesnt need that
strong a processor/graphic card.

if he works with programs like solidworks, pro engineer, lightwave, maya, etc.
he will need something powerful.

Maya is the most powerful software I use, though I'm into low poly models for a car simulator. I barely ever make renders of them.

Something similar to mine, or better than it will tide you over for awhile. like I said, I can play all the new games out there on high settings and get good fps on 1680 x 1050 resolution (22" monitor setting). So, 1200 bucks really aint that bad for a decent gaming/overall rig that'll keep up with the times for awhile. Go to http://www.cyberpowerpc.com or http://www.newegg.com and do some price checking. cyberpower is a good ccomp config site tha lets you choose what you want and see the end price. then you can go buy it from a comp store lol.

similar to yours except replace the amd processor with an overclocked core 2 duo, you get more bang for you buck.

@Cloverleaf - Not sure what the specs of your old computer are, but it could be worth keeping around as a spare with Linux on it. I think you'd find that the old computer is a lot more responsive if you get rid of Windows XP in favor of one of the many Linux distros.

Linux is free and has a lot of free software that will likely meet your needs. It will even run SRO!

Just another avenue to explore. It's always good to have a spare system, and you may even find it works good enough where you don't need to spend money on a new system.
